The Shell House, Hatfield Forest, Essex for The National Trust.

Delicate repair works were undertaken to rescue this attractive 1760's folly from the Buildings At Risk Register.

The building was underpinned with brickwork set in lime mortar, and piecing in repairs undertaken to the rotted timber frame, whilst carefully protecting the decorative exterior. Damaged areas of flint work were repaired using whole and knapped flints in patterns set with shells and coloured glass in varying colours of lime mortars.

The 9 month project was completed by renewing the roof and increasing the overhang to improve future weather resistance of the building.

Finally, the interior timber panelling was reinstated, the vertical sash windows and hidden shutters were brought back into working order, including making up box wood rollers. The redecoration of the fine interior with it's splendid shell ceiling completed the project. View opening times
