Hertford Castle Medieval Walls.
The ancient flint walls of Hertford Castle stand as significant ruins from 12th Century, with a 13th Century gate house. The walls are up to 2m thick at the base and taper slightly towards the top, with an outer and inner face of flint work and a rubble core. The damage had been caused by a combination of water ingress at the top of the wall and ivy root penetration causing delamination of the various layers.
Careful repairs were carried out removing failed surfaces and rebuilding flint work set in lime mortar to a depth of 250mm.
